The Center for Sustainable Living is an ever-evolving, citizen focused, grassroots organization in Northfield, Minnesota. We strive to bring about inspiration and change from citizen-organized, and citizen-realized projects and aspirations. We have been and continue to be an incubator for projects and efforts relating to agricultural education and preservation, social and economic justice, sustainable living, and community well-being.
Our current projects include (click on headings for more information):
Northfield Commons Café Discussions
A new and evolving project of the CSL is the Northfield Commons Café. Using an “open space” circle-based discussion model, we invite people of all ages and walks of life to come together to “explore questions that matter” and begin to generate new forms of grassroots leadership and social change. In this model, “we are the leaders we have been waiting for.” We come together to converse, create art, draw out meaning, and examine what is “emerging” among participants, as they grapple with ideas of community, sustainability, and the guiding of their very lives.
The Northfield Commons Cafés are part of a larger emerging project of the CSL, focusing on drawing out the energy of “cultural creatives” in our community.
Northfield Community Gardeners
The Center for Sustainable Living is proud to be the fiscal sponsor for the Northfield Community Gardeners group. This group of ambitious volunteers has recently secured a space for the Greenvale Park Community Garden, in collaboration with the Northfield School District Community Services division. The Northfield Community Gardeners will be working to secure more community garden space in Northfield in the future!
Community Composting
Every year during the Northfield Farmers Market season, The Center for Sustainable Living collects your food scrap compost waste, to be turned into compost for local community gardens. As an option with your membership, you can be a part of our Community Composting Project, and will receive your own “composting kit”, consisting of a compost bucket and instructions.
In addition, we are available to give composting workshops to neighborhood and community groups.
In the future we envision having many neighborhood-based compost collection sites around the city of Northfield. If you are interested in being a compost collection site, contact us at compost@centerforsustainableliving.org.
